How to Build a REST API with Node.js: A Beginner-Friendly Tutorial

Node.js is one of the fastest ways to build a REST API. Its non-blocking event loop handles many requests at once, and Express makes routing simple. This tutorial walks you through the core steps to get a working API running locally.

You only need Node.js installed and a terminal. Everything else installs with npm.

1. Set Up the Project

Create a folder and initialize it:

  • mkdir my-api && cd my-api
  • npm init -y
  • npm install express

2. Create the Server

Create server.js and start a basic Express app:

  • Import Express and call express()
  • Add app.use(express.json()) to parse JSON bodies
  • Listen on port 3000 with app.listen()

3. Define REST Routes

REST maps HTTP verbs to actions. For a simple user list:

  • GET /users — return all users
  • GET /users/:id — return one user
  • POST /users — create a user from req.body
  • PUT /users/:id — update a user
  • DELETE /users/:id — remove a user

Read parameters with req.params.id and always send proper status codes like 200, 201, or 404.

4. Test and Improve

Run node server.js and test with Postman or curl. Store data in memory first, then swap in a database such as MongoDB or PostgreSQL. Add middleware for logging, validation, and error handling as the API grows.

Conclusion

Building a REST API with Node.js and Express takes minutes, not days. Start with clean routes, return correct status codes, and layer in persistence and security once the basics work.
