How to Use TensorFlow for Image Classification: A Practical Guide

Image classification is a core computer vision task, and TensorFlow makes it accessible through its high-level Keras API. This guide covers the essential workflow, from loading raw image files to generating predictions with a trained neural network.

Start by installing TensorFlow with `pip install tensorflow`. For data, organize your images into folders where each subfolder represents a class. TensorFlow’s `keras.utils.image_dataset_from_directory` utility automatically labels and batches your images for you.

1. Load and Preprocess Data

Use the preprocessing pipeline to prepare your dataset:

  • Resize all images with `image_size=(256, 256)`
  • Apply a `Rescaling` layer to normalize pixel values to [0, 1]
  • Use `validation_split` to hold out data for testing

2. Build the Model

Construct a convolutional neural network (CNN) using `tf.keras.Sequential`:

  • Add `Conv2D` layers to detect features like edges and textures
  • Insert `MaxPooling2D` layers to reduce spatial dimensions
  • Flatten the output and add `Dense` layers for classification
  • End with a `softmax` activation for multi-class probabilities

3. Compile and Train

Configure the model before fitting it on your data:

  • Set the loss to `sparse_categorical_crossentropy` for integer labels
  • Use the `Adam` optimizer for efficient convergence
  • Track validation accuracy with the `metrics` parameter
  • Call `model.fit()` with an appropriate number of epochs

4. Evaluate and Predict

After training, test the model on unseen images:

  • Use `model.evaluate()` to get loss and accuracy on the validation set
  • Apply `model.predict()` to obtain class probabilities
  • Interpret results with `tf.argmax()` to get the predicted class label

TensorFlow streamlines the entire image classification pipeline. Mastering these core steps lets you extend to transfer learning, data augmentation, and custom architectures. Start small, iterate, and scale to larger datasets with confidence.
