How to Build a Real-Time Chat App with WebSockets: A Step-by-Step Guide

WebSockets enable a persistent, two-way connection between client and server, making them ideal for live chat. Instead of polling, every message is pushed instantly to all connected users. This guide covers building a minimal chat app with Node.js and the ws library.

1. Set Up the WebSocket Server

Initialize a Node project, install ws and Express, then create an HTTP server. Attach the WebSocket server to it and track connected clients in a simple Set for broadcasting.

  • Run npm init -y and install dependencies with npm install express ws.
  • Pass your HTTP server to the WebSocketServer constructor.
  • Store every new connection in a Set so messages can reach all clients.

2. Create the Client Interface

Serve a plain index.html file with a message input, send button, and chat log. Open a socket using new WebSocket('ws://localhost:3000') and attach event listeners for onopen, onmessage, and onclose.

3. Handle Real-Time Messages

On the client, append incoming data to the chat log in the onmessage handler. On the server, listen for message events and loop through all connected clients, forwarding the raw payload to each socket. This broadcast pattern gives you synchronous multi-user chat with minimal code.

4. Add Essential Improvements

Your basic chat works, but a few tweaks make it production-ready:

  • Send JSON payloads containing usernames and timestamps.
  • Implement a heartbeat using ping/pong to remove dead clients from the set.
  • Distinguish message types like join, leave, and chat using a type field.
  • Use wss:// with SSL when deploying to production.

With these foundations, you can easily add typing indicators, message history, or file sharing. The WebSocket pattern scales well, and frameworks like Socket.IO extend it with rooms and automatic reconnection.
