Build a RESTful API with Node.js: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

RESTful APIs are the backbone of modern web applications. With Node.js, you can create a lightweight, fast API using JavaScript. This guide walks you through building a simple API to manage resources, perfect for beginners or those needing a quick refresher.

Before starting, make sure Node.js and npm are installed. You’ll also need a text editor and a terminal. We’ll use Express, the most popular Node.js web framework, to handle routing and middleware.

Setting Up Your Node.js Environment

Create a new project folder and initialize it with npm init -y. Then install Express: npm install express. This sets up package.json and downloads the framework.

Creating the Server with Express

Create an index.js file. Import Express and set up a basic server:

const express = require('express');
const app = express();
app.use(express.json());
app.listen(3000, () => console.log('API running on port 3000'));

This boilerplate starts a server that parses JSON request bodies.

Defining Routes and Handling Requests

Use app.METHOD(PATH, HANDLER) to define routes. For example, a simple in-memory array of items:

  • GET /items — returns all items
  • GET /items/:id — returns a single item
  • POST /items — creates a new item
  • PUT /items/:id — updates an existing item
  • DELETE /items/:id — deletes an item

Each handler reads or modifies the array and sends a JSON response with appropriate status codes.

Testing Your API

Start the server with node index.js. Use a tool like Postman, curl, or even a browser to test your endpoints. Send GET requests to verify data, POST with a JSON body to add records, and check for proper error handling.

You now have a functional RESTful API. Expand it by adding database integration, authentication, or middleware for logging. Node.js and Express give you a solid foundation to scale your API as needed.
