How to Build a Full-Stack App: A Practical Step-by-Step Tutorial
Building a full-stack app means connecting a user interface to a server, a database, and a deployment pipeline. This tutorial covers the core steps using a JavaScript stack, though the same workflow fits any language.
1. Pick Your Stack
Choose tools you can debug quickly. A reliable default is React on the frontend, Node.js with Express for the API, PostgreSQL for storage, and Render or Vercel for hosting.

- Frontend: React or Vue
- Backend: Node.js + Express
- Database: PostgreSQL
2. Build the Backend First
Start with the API. Create one route, such as GET /api/items, and return hardcoded JSON. Once that works, connect PostgreSQL and replace the mock data with a real query.
Design the data model early
Write your schema before writing components. A single table with an id, a title, and a timestamp is enough to prove the whole stack works end to end.
3. Add the Frontend
Fetch from your API using fetch or Axios inside a useEffect hook, then render the results in a list. Handle three states: loading, error, and success.
4. Connect, Test, and Deploy
Enable CORS on the server, store secrets in environment variables, and test the full flow locally. Then deploy the API and frontend separately and update your base URL.
Start small, ship one working feature, and expand from there. A simple app running in production teaches more than a complex one that never deploys.
