How to Create a Chat Application with WebSockets: A Step-by-Step Guide

WebSockets enable real-time, full-duplex communication over a single TCP connection, making them the perfect choice for building chat applications. Unlike traditional HTTP polling, WebSockets deliver messages instantly and efficiently. In this guide, you’ll build a complete group chat app using Node.js and the native browser WebSocket API.

1. Set Up the WebSocket Server

First, initialize a Node.js project and install the ws library:

  • Run npm init -y and npm install ws.
  • Create a server.js file and instantiate a WebSocket server on a chosen port.
  • Listen for connection events and store each new client socket in an array.

2. Build the Client Interface

Create an HTML page with a chat window and input field. Connect to the server using new WebSocket('ws://localhost:8080'). Handle the open, message, and close events to update the UI when messages arrive.

3. Implement Message Broadcasting

When the server receives a message from one client, loop through the stored sockets and send the data to each one. Use JSON.stringify() on the client and JSON.parse() on the server to transmit structured payloads containing the username and message text.

4. Handle Disconnects and Edge Cases

Remove a socket from the array when its close event fires to avoid sending messages to dead connections. Add a heartbeat ping/pong mechanism to detect inactive clients, and implement client-side reconnection logic with setTimeout for a seamless experience.

With this foundation, you can extend your chat app with typing indicators, user presence, or emoji reactions. WebSockets are a fundamental technology for interactive, collaborative applications—master them and unlock the power of real-time web development.
